Badging: The designation is on the truck. Look for Silverado 1500 or Silverado 2500 HD badging on the tailgate, door panels, or front fenders. This is the simplest check on most examples.

Door jamb sticker: The sticker on the driver’s door jamb includes the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). A GVWR below 8,500 lbs is a light-duty 1500. A GVWR above 8,500 lbs indicates a heavy-duty platform such as the 2500 HD.

Front axle: The 2500 HD has a solid front axle on certain configurations. The 1500 uses independent front suspension. Looking underneath at the front axle is a definitive identifier on equipped models.

VIN decode: The VIN includes a character that identifies the model class. Any VIN lookup tool will decode whether the truck is a 1500 or 2500 HD from the VIN alone.
