2026 Chevrolet Suburban vs. the Competition

Considering the Suburban’s history, it is surprising that Ford did not introduce a competitor until the 2007 model year, 10 years after introducing the Tahoe-competing Expedition.  Like the Suburban, the Expedition Max is built on the brand’s full-size truck chassis, which underpins the F-150, and it shares most of the F-150’s mechanicals. The 2026 Expedition is the nameplate’s fifth design generation, which launched in the 2025 model year. It is available in Active, King Ranch, and Premium trim levels.  Instead of a V8, Ford powers the Expedition with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 that produces 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque.  There are no other engine options.

• The Expedition Max starting MSRP of 65,700 is higher than the Suburban’s entry MSRP of $63,700.
• The Expedition Max engine is more powerful than the Suburban’s base engine but is more on par with the Suburban’s 6.2-liter V8, trading 20 fewer horsepower for 20 more lb-ft of torque.
• The Suburban has a 2.6-inch longer wheelbase and is 4.6 inches longer overall, with the differences felt in the cabin.
• The Suburban has more cargo space in all configurations:
  • Behind the 3rd row:  41.5 vs. 37.4 cubic feet
  • Behind the 2nd row:  93.8 vs. 85.5 cubic feet
  • Behind the 1st row:  144.5 vs. 123.1 cubic feet
• In addition to space, the Suburban also has a greater payload capacity (2,070 vs. 1,956 lb.)
• The Suburban can be ordered for a seating capacity of nine vs. eight for the Expedition.
• 3rd-row legroom is about the same for both, with the Suburban having a slight edge (36.7 vs. 36.4 inches).
• Both models have a similar complement of safety technologies, including Blind Spot Warning, Rear Collision Mitigation, and Lane Departure Warning.
• Both models also have identical NHTSA safety ratings.
• Both models are available with hands-free highway driving systems, but the Suburban’s SuperCruise is engageable on more highways and offers better towing support than the Expedition’s BlueCruise system.

The Grand Wagoneer L is the most recent entry in this category.  Named after a full-size 4-door Jeep SUV that shared its design from 1962 to 1993, the new Grand Wagoneer debuted in 2022.  The Grand Wagoneer gives the impression that, like the Grand Cherokee, it is on a dedicated, possibly unibody platform, but in fact it is a wagon body sitting on a Ram 1500 chassis. 

Jeep has simplified its formerly confusing nomenclature.  There were Wagoneer and Wagoneer L models that were Tahoe and Suburban competitors, respectively.  The Grand Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer L were the same vehicles but optioned up considerably to compete with luxury brands.   Now they all fall under the Grand Wagoneer name with seven trim levels and a price range from $63,995 to $100,310 before options.  The Wagoneer S is a completely different model, smaller than the Grand Wagoneer and with an all-electric drivetrain.

All Grand Wagoneer L models are powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-6 producing  420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque.  The previous 510-horsepower version of the engine is no longer available. The base Grand Wagoneer L is available with rear-wheel drive and optional 4-wheel drive.  All other trims have standard 4-wheel drive.

• The Grand Wagoneer L engine is more powerful than the Suburban base engine, but is basically equivalent to the Suburban’s optional 6.2-liter V8.
• The Grand Wagoneer L has no counterpart to the Suburban Duramax turbodiesel, which delivers 495 lb-ft of torque.
• The Suburban uses a 10-speed automatic transmission, compared to the 8-speed automatic on the Grand Wagoneer.
• The Grand Wagoneer L has surprisingly small front legroom at 40.9 inches, compared to 44.5 inches in the Suburban.
• Third row head and legroom are within an inch of each other.
• The Grand Wagoneer L has a smidgen more cargo space behind the 3rd-row seat, but the Suburban significantly beats it in all other configurations:
  • Behind the 3rd row:  41.5 vs. 42.1 cubic feet
  • Behind the 2nd row:  93.8 vs. 85.3 cubic feet
  • Behind the 1st row:  144.5 vs. 130.91 cubic feet
• The Suburban also has a higher maximum payload capacity than the Grand Wagoneer L (1,759 vs. 1.550 lb.)
• The Suburban can be ordered for a seating capacity of nine vs. eight for the Grand Wagoneer L.
• The Suburban’s front brake rotors are significantly larger than those on the Grand Wagoneer L (16.1 vs. 14.9 inches).
• For a smoother and more stable highway ride, the Suburban’s wheelbase is 4.1 inches longer than on the Grand Wagoneer L (134.1 vs. 130 inches).
• The Suburban’s rain-sensitive wipers automatically adjust speed based on rainfall, allowing drivers to focus on driving. The Grand Wagoneer L’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed but cannot turn on/off or adjust based on rain.
• Useful for families, the Suburban’s keyless Access system can unlock doors from any outside door handle.  The Jeep unlocks only the front doors, requiring a second step to unlock the rear doors.
• In Consumer Reports’ brand rankings based on Safety, test results, and surveyed reliability, Jeep ranked dead last, and with a worse owner satisfaction rating than Chevrolet.
• Jeep has no counterpart to the Suburban’s available SuperCruise highway hands-free driving system.
