Important note: The EPA gap between the 5.3L V8 and the 3.0L Duramax is 7 mpg on the highway. At 15,000 annual highway miles, that is roughly 500 fewer gallons consumed per year on the diesel. The math gets more interesting at 20,000+ miles per year.

At $3.50 per gallon of diesel and $3.20 for regular unleaded, a driver covering 15,000 highway miles annually would use approximately 500 fewer gallons in the Duramax versus the 5.3L V8. At an average diesel price of $3.60 (roughly $0.40 above regular), the net annual fuel savings works out to approximately $800 to $1,000 per year. On a $2,500 diesel premium, the payback is roughly 2.5 to 3 years of primarily highway driving. At lower annual mileage, the payback stretches accordingly.

Pro tip: Run your own numbers before you buy. Take your actual annual highway mileage, divide by the MPG difference between the two engines, multiply by current diesel price versus regular gas price, and compare to the actual diesel premium on the truck you are considering. The math changes based on local fuel prices, which vary.

The 3.0L Duramax requires full synthetic diesel-spec oil (Dexos D) and holds approximately 7 quarts. A Silverado 1500 diesel oil change typically costs $15 to $25 more than the same service on the 5.3L V8 due to the additional oil capacity and the required diesel specification. At six oil changes per year, that adds up to $90 to $150 annually. Not dramatic, but real.

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF)

The Duramax diesel requires Diesel Exhaust Fluid, a urea solution used in the emissions control system. Consumption is approximately 1 gallon of DEF per 1,000 miles driven. DEF costs roughly $3 to $4 per gallon at most auto parts stores and dealerships. At 15,000 miles per year, the annual DEF cost is approximately $45 to $60. A minor but ongoing expense with no equivalent on the gas engines.

What the gas engine avoids

Gas engines have no DEF requirement, no diesel fuel filter service interval, and typically lower oil change costs. For buyers who prefer the simplest possible maintenance routine, the 5.3L V8 is the most straightforward long-term owner experience. The diesel’s additional service items are not difficult to manage, but they are real and ongoing.

Additional question: Does the Duramax diesel require premium fuel?

No. The 3.0L Duramax uses standard ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD), which is the diesel available at virtually every fuel station. It does not require any premium or additive-treated diesel for normal operation.

Where the Diesel’s Advantage Grows: Towing Efficiency

Gas engines under load: significant efficiency drop

When a Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 is pulling a loaded trailer, real-world fuel economy drops to approximately 10 to 15 mpg depending on load weight, grade, and speed. The engine is working at higher RPM to sustain highway speed under the additional weight, and efficiency suffers accordingly. The 6.2L V8 experiences a similar drop despite its extra power.

Diesel under load: torque at low RPM changes everything

The 3.0L Duramax produces 495 lb-ft of torque at 1,750 rpm. That means the engine is not working as hard at highway towing speeds because it has abundant torque available at low RPM. Real-world towing economy on the Duramax diesel typically falls in the 18 to 23 mpg range depending on load, which is meaningfully better than the gas options under the same conditions. For buyers who regularly tow a boat, a camper, or equipment, the diesel’s efficiency advantage under load can be the deciding factor. Pro tip: If you tow regularly, the diesel’s payback calculation improves significantly because the MPG gap is wider under load. A buyer towing 8,000 lbs on a weekly basis will see a much faster payback than a buyer who mostly drives unloaded on city roads.


Who Should Choose Gas and Who Should Choose Diesel

The honest answer is that neither engine is universally better. The right choice depends on how you actually use the truck.

Choose the 5.3L V8 if:

You drive primarily in town with shorter trips. Your annual highway mileage is under 12,000 miles. You tow infrequently and the load stays well under the truck’s maximum. You prefer the simplest possible maintenance routine with no DEF and no diesel-specific service items. You plan to keep the truck for three years or less. The 5.3L is the most popular Silverado 1500 engine for good reason: it is proven, powerful, easy to own, and the right engine for most buyers.

Choose the 3.0L Duramax if:

You drive 15,000 or more highway miles annually. You tow regularly, even at modest weights, and want the efficiency advantage under load. You plan to keep the truck for five or more years where the fuel savings have time to recoup the purchase premium. You are buying the High Country or another upper trim where the diesel option is available and the premium is a smaller percentage of the total purchase price. Important note: The diesel is currently available only on the LT trim and above on the Silverado 1500. If you are shopping the Work Truck or Custom trim, the gas engines are your only option. The diesel’s availability on the Work Truck (which it has on the 2500HD) does not apply to the 1500.


What About the 6.2L V8? Where It Fits

The 6.2L V8 is the highest-output gas option on the Silverado 1500 and deserves its own honest look in this comparison.

The 6.2L burns more fuel than the 5.3L

Despite producing 420 hp versus the 5.3L’s 355 hp, the 6.2L does not return meaningfully better fuel economy than the 5.3L. It is available only on RST, LTZ, High Country, and ZR2 trims, carries a significant purchase premium, and the buyers who specify it are typically prioritizing peak performance and maximum towing capacity at 13,300 lbs rather than efficiency. For buyers choosing between the 6.2L gas and the Duramax diesel specifically on a High Country or LTZ, the diesel delivers better fuel economy at every driving condition in exchange for a modest additional diesel premium over the 6.2L option.

Additional question: Can you get the diesel on the 2500HD Silverado too?

Yes, but it is a completely different engine. The 2500HD uses the 6.6L Duramax V8 diesel, which produces 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque and is in a separate class from the 3.0L Duramax I6 in the 1500.
