Warranty Questions

What is the Chevrolet Silverado factory warranty?

The 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 comes with a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. The powertrain warranty covers the engine, transmission, and drivetrain components. Both are included with every new Silverado purchase.

Chevrolet also includes 2 years of complimentary scheduled maintenance (oil changes and tire rotations) with new vehicle purchases. Check current model-year terms at time of purchase for any updates to coverage.

What does the Silverado powertrain warranty cover?

The powertrain warranty covers the engine block and all internal engine parts, the cylinder heads, the transmission, the transfer case, drive axles, and driveshaft components. It does not cover wear items like brakes, tires, filters, or wiper blades. The 5-year/60,000-mile term is whichever comes first.

Is the Silverado warranty transferable?

The Chevrolet factory warranty transfers to subsequent owners within the original warranty period. A buyer who purchases a used Silverado that is still within the original 3-year/36,000-mile or 5-year/60,000-mile period is covered by the remaining factory warranty. This is one of the advantages of buying a late-model used Silverado from a reputable dealer.

What is the Silverado extended warranty?

Chevrolet offers extended protection plans (GM Protection Plan) that can extend coverage beyond the factory warranty period. Coverage options and pricing vary. McFarland can walk you through current extended protection options at the time of purchase. Extended warranties are worth evaluating if you plan to keep the truck for several years beyond the factory coverage period.

Cab and Configuration Questions

What are the Silverado 1500 cab sizes?

The Silverado 1500 is available in three cab configurations:

  • Regular Cab: two doors, bench seating, no rear seat. Available only on the Work Truck trim. The longest bed options are available with Regular Cab. This is the commercial and fleet configuration.
  • Double Cab: four doors with rear-hinged smaller rear access doors. Full rear bench seating. A practical choice for buyers who occasionally carry rear passengers but primarily use the truck for work.
  • Crew Cab: four doors with full-size rear doors and a full rear seat with real legroom. The most popular configuration for buyers who use the truck as a daily driver and regularly carry passengers. Most Silverado 1500 trims above the Work Truck are primarily offered in Crew Cab.

What are the Silverado bed sizes?

The Silverado 1500 is available in two bed lengths:

  • Short Bed (5 ft 8 in): most common on Crew Cab configurations. Easier to maneuver and park while still providing usable cargo space.
  • Standard Bed (6 ft 6 in): available on Regular Cab and Double Cab configurations. More cargo length for buyers who regularly haul longer materials.

A long 8 ft 2 in bed is not available on the 1500. That bed length is available on the Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD.

How much weight can a Silverado 1500 carry in the bed?

The Silverado 1500 has a maximum payload capacity of up to 2,238 lbs depending on configuration. The specific payload rating for any given truck is listed on the door jamb sticker inside the driver’s door. That sticker reflects the certified capacity for that exact vehicle as configured.

Payload capacity includes everything in the truck: passengers, cargo in the bed, and tongue weight from a trailer. All of those weights add together against the payload rating. Do not rely on the published maximum; check the door jamb sticker on the specific truck.

How much does a Silverado 1500 weigh?

Curb weight varies by configuration. The Silverado 1500 Crew Cab with the 5.3L V8 typically has a curb weight in the range of approximately 4,500 to 4,900 lbs depending on trim and equipment. Regular Cab configurations weigh less. GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, the maximum loaded weight) typically runs from approximately 6,600 to 7,200 lbs depending on configuration. Check the door jamb sticker for the specific GVWR of the truck you are evaluating.

Engine and Technology Questions

What is AFM and DFM on a Silverado?

Both are cylinder deactivation systems that reduce the V8 to fewer cylinders under light load to improve fuel economy.

  • AFM (Active Fuel Management): the earlier system, used on Silverado 1500 models with the 5.3L V8 from approximately 2007 through 2021. AFM deactivates four specific cylinders under light load. It has a documented pattern of lifter failures on some engines in the 2014-2021 range.
  • DFM (Dynamic Fuel Management): the updated system introduced in the 2022 model year. DFM can deactivate cylinders in more combinations and patterns, reducing the stress concentration that AFM placed on specific components. The DFM has a cleaner reliability record than the AFM era.

How do I know if my Silverado has AFM or DFM?

The simplest way: if the truck is a 2022 or newer Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8, it has DFM. If it is a 2014-2021 Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8, it has AFM.

You can also check the RPO (Regular Production Option) codes on the sticker inside the glovebox door. The 5.3L V8 with AFM is designated L83. The 5.3L V8 with DFM is designated L84. If you see L84 on the RPO sticker, the truck has DFM.

How do I know if my Silverado has a tow package?

Check the window sticker or the RPO codes in the glovebox. The Max Trailering Package is listed as a separate line item on the window sticker and as an RPO code (Z82 on most configurations) on the glovebox sticker. Physical indicators include: a trailer brake controller mounted under the dash, a 7-pin trailer wiring harness at the rear bumper, and a transmission oil cooler (not visible externally but part of the package).

The easiest confirmation is the door jamb sticker, which shows the vehicle’s certified towing capacity. A truck with the Max Trailering Package will show a higher maximum tow rating than the base configuration for that engine.

Package and Option Code Questions

What does 2FL mean on a Silverado?

2FL is a sub-model or package designation code that appears on Silverado window stickers and ordering documents. It typically designates a specific variant within a trim level, most commonly seen on the LT trim. The 2FL package bundles a set of equipment and option group combinations that Chevrolet uses for fleet and commercial ordering purposes.

In practice, a Silverado listed as an LT 2FL has a specific set of included features defined by that ordering code. It is not a consumer-facing trim name. If you see 2FL on a window sticker or used listing and want to know exactly what it includes, the window sticker itemizes all equipment, or a dealer can look up the full RPO breakdown by VIN.

What is the Z71 package on a Silverado?

Z71 is Chevrolet’s off-road package. On the Silverado 1500, it comes standard on the Trail Boss trims and is available as an option on the LTZ. The Z71 package includes a 2-inch factory suspension lift, Rancho monotube shocks, 33-inch all-terrain tires, a locking rear differential, and front and rear skid plates.

For a full comparison of which trims include or offer the Z71 package, see our Silverado 1500 trim comparison guide.

Reliability and Used Buying Questions

What Silverado years should you avoid?

No model year of the Silverado is a universal avoid. The years that require the most scrutiny when buying used are the 2014-2021 range with the 5.3L V8 equipped with Active Fuel Management (AFM). This range had a documented pattern of lifter failures on some engines, typically associated with deferred oil changes or extended intervals that degraded oil quality.

This does not mean every truck in this range has the problem. Many do not and will not. But a used Silverado from the 2014-2021 range with the 5.3L V8 deserves specific inspection: check the oil condition, listen for valve train noise on a cold start, and verify the oil change history. The 2022 and newer trucks with the updated DFM system are the cleanest buy on this specific issue.

For a full used Silverado buying framework, see our used Silverado buying guide.

What are the best Silverado years to buy used?

Within the current T1XX generation (2019-present), the 2021-2023 range offers the best balance of depreciation, remaining useful life, and modern features. These trucks have the 13.4-inch touchscreen, updated safety systems, and the refined version of the EcoTec3 engine family. A clean 2021 or 2022 LT with the 5.3L V8 and documented service history is one of the strongest used truck purchases in the half-ton segment.

For buyers on a tighter budget, the 2016-2018 range from the previous K2XX generation represents solid value with the pre-2022 caveat on the AFM system noted above.

Does the Silverado have a limited slip differential?

Limited slip differential (LSD) is available on certain Silverado 1500 configurations as part of option packages. The electronic limited slip differential (ELSD) is available on some trims. The locking rear differential found on Trail Boss trims is a separate system that locks the differential fully rather than providing progressive slip limitation.

To verify whether a specific truck has limited slip or a locking rear differential, check the RPO codes in the glovebox. G80 indicates the Eaton Gov-Lok limited slip differential. The presence of a 4WD system does not automatically mean the truck has a limited slip rear.

Ownership and Service Questions

When is the Silverado getting a new body style?

The current Silverado 1500 T1XX generation launched for the 2019 model year. As of 2026, this generation is in its current production run. GM typically refreshes or redesigns the Silverado on a cycle of several years, but specific future redesign timing is not confirmed publicly. For current model year information, come in and we will show you exactly what is available now.

How many Silverados are sold each year?

The Silverado 1500 is one of the top-selling vehicles in the United States, consistently ranking among the top three best-selling trucks annually alongside the Ford F-150 and RAM 1500. Annual Silverado sales typically run in the range of 500,000 to 600,000 units in the US market, though figures vary by year.

How do I know what trim my Silverado is?

Check the exterior badging on the tailgate or rear quarters. Most Silverado 1500 configurations have the trim name (LT, LTZ, High Country, etc.) badged on the truck. You can also find the trim level on the door jamb sticker, the window sticker, or by looking up the VIN at a Chevrolet dealer. The RPO codes in the glovebox provide a complete list of all factory-equipped options.
